Viruses are fascinating obligate intracellular pathogens that infect nearly every organism on Earth. Understanding virus-host interactions has led to numerous fundamental discoveries, including that DNA is the genetic material of life. This course will focus on understanding virus-host interactions from the molecular to the global scale. Topics of exploration include basic virology, virus-host interactions, recent and past virus epidemics (i.e., ebola virus, polio virus, influenza virus), zoonoses, vaccines, antiviral treatments, and Dr. Flenniken’s research is aimed at understanding the role of viruses in recent increased losses of honey bee colonies in the US.

Michelle Flenniken
Michelle Flenniken is an associate professor in the Department of Plant Sciences and Plant Pathology at Montana State University. She is a microbiologist who investigates honeybee host-pathogen interactions. She also serves as co-director of the Pollinator Health Center at MSU. She received a B.S. in biology from the University of Iowa, then was a Peace Corps volunteer in Ghana before obtaining her Ph.D. in microbiology from Montana State University. Before becoming an MSU faculty member, she did postdoctoral research at the University of California, San Francisco. Michelle has ten years of experience teaching General Genetics (BIOB 375) and virology courses at MSU.| Date | Day | Time | Location |
