This course introduces first-time managers, soon-to-be managers and aspiring managers to the basics of managing others to achieve greater results. We will explore the fundamentals of functional
management, with particular relevance for those in the technical, engineering, or product fields.
Topics include:
o Planning and forecasting
o Organizing and staffing
o Coordinating and teamwork
o Leadership and motivation
o Monitoring and controlling
In addition, we will discuss interviewing and hiring, roles and
responsibilities, how to set SMART goals, and feedback mechanisms.

Project Management Basics
Whether project management is a function of your new job or if it's a skill you aspire to learn, here's your chance to explore the fundamentals of project management with a focus on the science
and technology industries.
We'll cover:
o How to define, set requirements for,
and kick off a project
o Planning and organizing a project
o Executing the project plan
o Monitoring and controlling a project
o Closing a project.
We will also examine project management tools and participate in a live exercise in key project planning techniques and tips for optimized and effective project plans.
Workshop is open to everyone however members of Montana Photonics Industry Alliance will receive discounted pricing.
MPIA Members: $170 per workshop or $290 for both
Non MPIA Members: $250 per workshop or $400 for both

Mark Carroll is a senior executive and consultant with more than 30 years of success in the laser, photonic, energy and defense industries. His areas of expertise include due diligence, acquisition integration, strategic business design, organization design, leadership/change management, technical product marketing/positioning, business analytics, competitive analysis, P&L management, lean operations, and project management. Carroll has held leadership positions in companies such as TRW Space Systems, Montana Instruments, and Blackmore Sensors and Analytics. As Vice President of the Instruments Business with Newport Corporation, he managed a $90 million business and helped lead the marketing, product development, and manufacture of tunable laser and photonic instrument product lines.
