Montana and the Northern Rockies are often used as settings for dramatic and historical movies, notably: A River Runs Through It, Legends of the Fall, Little Big Man, and The Revenant. Other films incorporate modern Montana into social and dramatic themes, for example: Rancho Deluxe, Certain Women, The Missouri Breaks, The Horse Whisperer, and Thunderbolt and Lightfoot. We will compare clips from these types of movies to literary and historical sources, especially Norman McClean's novella A River Runs Through It and Ross Toole's Montana, An Uncommon Land.

David Swingle
David Swingle is a historical documentary film producer, antique film restorer, museum curator, museum history teaching professor, and a specialist in restoration of Civil War and Indian Wars arms. He has worked with the Museum of the Rockies for many years, curating the museum's weapons-as-technology exhibit, Weapons that Changed the West: From Flint to Fusion (2000-2001), its Montana State University 100th Anniversary exhibit (1993-1994), and its 50th Anniversary Exhibit (2006). Dave and his son Karl produced, restored and digitized 20 documentary films for the American Revolution Bicentennial which are now archived in the Marin County Civic Center, San Rafael, California.| Date | Day | Time | Location |
