"Africa begins at the Pyrenees," said Theophile Gautier in 1843, revealing a belief that "Spain is different" from the rest of Europe. The Iberian Peninsula was the realm of Visigothic Christians and a Jewish minority when migrating Muslims arrived in 711. Thus began eight centuries of a rich and diverse culture characterized by the delicate balance of Convivencia (living together) and the violent 'triumph' of the Christian Refconquista (reconquering) in 1492. Christian, Jewish, and Islamic arts and architecture will help us explore Spain's multicultural heritage and unique place in European history. Warning: you will want to visit Spain!
