In this course, Kristen Intemann, professor of philosophy in the MSU Department of History and Philosophy, will discuss a range of topics aimed at helping us think critically and responsibly about medical claims, scientific claims, political claims and claims made by and about the media. She will address questions such as: How do we know what to believe and what is…well…BS? How do we know whom to trust? What sources of evidence should we use? How can we distinguish real news from “fake” news? How can we assess evidence and recognize errors in reasoning? What are the ways that emerging technologies and social media may trick us?
