K-12 teachers were thrust into the world of online teaching due to the pandemic, often resulting in frustrated teachers and students. While some teachers are successfully exploring new ways to teach, many teachers are overwhelmed and some students have simply disappeared. Transitioning teaching and learning to completely online, or a hybrid-flexible (hyflex) model that combines in-class instruction and synchronous, asynchronous or polysynchronous content, requires thoughtful and intentional adaptations including revisiting the scholarship of teaching.

Many organizations are offering training and support for those who are new to online teaching. However, few specifically address the challenges K-12 teachers face when teaching science. This four-week short-course can serve as a practical next step for K-12 science teachers who have wrestled with online teaching and are ready to take their practice to the next level, where teaching is a joy and students are engaged.

This course covers the top pedagogical skills every online science teacher needs to facilitate effective and exciting online science learning experiences. This is a hybrid, or flipped classroom, course for K-12 teachers, where live synchronous discussions held on Saturdays are preceded by asynchronous reading, watching and reflection. Teachers who complete this course will have new skills to identify and evaluate tools, and clearly describe online instructional and learning challenges related to the science they are teaching, communities of practice and pedagogies applicable to online science learning. Teachers will also know how to develop a personal "teaching innovation action plan" that can serve as a launching point for continuous improvement.

Jim Vanides

Jim Vanides has been an online instructor for Montana State University since 2013, teaching teachers as part of the original NSF-funded National Teacher Enhancement Network initiative.

Jim serves as an advisor to the California Science Project, advancing Next Generation Science Standards in California as part of the Subject Matter Project of the University of California. He is also an advisor to the California STEM Network, an advocacy initiative of Children Now.

Jim's experience includes more than a decade of leadership in Corporate Philanthropy for HP, where he was instrumental in the launch of over 1,500 primary, secondary and higher education-required projects in 41 countries. In this capacity, Jim launched and wrote HP's original blog on education innovation, sharing highlights from K-12 and higher education projects around the world. For the last four years, Jim has been a senior education and industry consultant to organizations around the world that are passionate about creating extraordinary learning experiences for students, with a consulting practice focused on building partnerships between education and industry organizations.

From the launch of his engineering career in Silicon Valley to today, Jim has been a tireless advocate for STEM(+) education and teacher professional learning, sharing experiences that help educators prepare students for the world of work and making a positive contribution to society.

Jim holds a bachelor's in engineering and a master's in education, both from Stanford University.

Foundations of Online Teaching is recommended as a prerequisite, but not required.

Teaching Science Online is eligible for 18 OPI units or 1.8 CEUs. CEUs may meet professional development requirements for teachers outside of Montana. Check with the appropriate professional organization to confirm that they will accept CEUs from Montana State University. CEUs will appear on transcripts requested from the MSU Office of the Registrar.

Upon satisfactory completion of this course, students will be issued a digital badge.
