interested in strengthening their media production and journalism skills for a successful
year with SRL. Teachers will learn different strategies for aligning our project-based
learning program through a range of participation to help students find their voices
inside and outside of the classroom.

Learning Outcomes
- Learn about best practices in media production by viewing the Level Up videos produced by PBS Newshour Student Reporting Labs.
- Explore the SRL curriculum, timelines and expectations with peers and experienced instructors.
- Share best practices and ideas for classroom management with fellow participants.
- Learn how to get buy-in from school administration and local media.
- Learn how to help students tell stories with unique youth perspectives about community issues.
- Work with public media professionals to connect students to the world through local PBS stations.
- Complete an instructional unit and plan for implementation of the PBS Newshour Student Reporting Lab curriculum for the new school year
- Visit MontanaPBS for a tour and shadow MontanaPBS producers to learn more about television production in the community
- Work closely with MontanaPBS Education to develop an implementation plan for the PBS Newshour Student Reporting Labs curriculum

The three-day virtual workshop focuses on preparing new teachers and teachers interested in strengthening their media production and journalism skills for a successful year with SRL. Teachers will learn different strategies for aligning our project-based learning program through a range of participation to help students find their voices inside and outside of the classroom.
Major Topics Production Equipment
Teachers will work with PBS Newshour Student Reporting Labs team members to learn about the equipment needed to produce content including DSLR cameras, lighting kits, audio equipment and tripods. They are encouraged to bring their own equipment to the training to get support from PBS producers about using it.
Video Editing
Participants will learn the process of offloading and organizing video footage using material that was shot by SRL students. They will understand the importance of creating a digital folder structure to organize the various components that are needed for their editing project including video files, audio, graphics, and other important assets.
Participants will learn major editing concepts and then apply these concepts by putting together a one minute story from video footage shot by SRL students.
Capturing Audio
Teachers will work with audio production experts to learn about capturing quality audio for a media piece. They will explore the equipment needed and learn tips and tricks for getting the best audio possible. Teachers are invited to bring their own audio equipment to the academy to get advice from experts about how best to use it. They will create and edit their own audio during the workshop.
Lighting
Teachers will learn how to use a variety of tools to set up the lighting for a shoot. They will learn about equipment they can purchase and how to help students understand the importance of lighting. They will analyze the lighting in sample media pieces and engage in discussion with peers about the strengths and weaknesses of the lighting in each shot.
The Art of an Interview
Interviews are a very important part of the storytelling process. The purpose of an interview is to collect information about a topic or event to then be able to report on it. Participants will learn about the following components of a successful interview,

Script Writing
Teachers will works with PBS Newshour Student Reporting Labs team members to learn about scriptwriting and how to guide students through the process. They will read, analyze and annotate scripts used for past segments on the PBS Newshour and engage in discussion with other teachers about the art of script writing.
Storyboarding
Teachers will learn how to support students as they plan their productions by creating storyboards before, during and after they capture film. They will work with a team of teachers to build their own storyboards and reflect on the process of creating media using one.
The Role of Public Media
During the academy teachers will have an opportunity to meet key players in Public Media production including staff members from the PBS Newshour as well as producers form PBS stations across the US. They will learn about the mission of PBS member stations to serve and connect citizens by producing unbiased media content for broadcast television and digital platforms. Teachers will visit MontanaPBS after the teacher academy to tour the station, meet with production staff and consult with the Education team about their experience taking the academy and how they plan to implement the curriculum in the next school year.

Prerequisites for the course. It is understood that a bachelor's degree is required to take a graduate level course. - Participants must be accepted into the PBS Newshour Student Reporting Labs Teacher Academy. - Participants must be a teacher in a Montana School currently implementing the PBS Newshour Student Reporting Labs curriculum. - Participants must agree to use the PBS Newshour Student Reporting Labs curriculum with their students in the following school year
