Installing ground-loop geothermal for heating and cooling is expensive. An emerging vertical helical ground-loop technology could be the solution for balancing performance and installation costs. In the fall of 2021, the first large-scale commercial application of this technology was installed at Winifred School in Winifred, Montana. Who did the drilling? you will never guess!

Kevin Amende
Kevin Amende is an associate professor in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at Montana State University and is the co-director of the Integrated Design Lab. He is currently serving as the ASHRAE Region IX Regional Members Council Representative. He is the lead author of the textbook "Principles of HVAC," now in its 9th Edition.
