In this course, freelance art writer, author and lecturer Michele Corriel will analyze how and why the state and its people were depicted in art, beginning with the art of White Europeans who came to Montana as a result of Manifest Destiny. Participants will study Native American art and the gender roles depicted in various types of artwork. The course will follow a fairly straight forward timeline from the earliest Native American, art to the late 1800s with the work of Edgar Paxson and then to the early 1900s with the work of Charles M. Russell and Fredrick Remington. The course will also examine how Modernists in Montana created a new identity and affected the art in the state after World War II, as well as contemporary Montana artists.
