This short course will examine the history, design and cultivation of bonsai trees. Learn how a tree and a container are combined to create a “bonsai.” By following the evolution of bonsai methods from China, through Japan, to the USA, students will understand how the principles of design, characteristics of tree species, selection of pots and horticultural methods are used in the creation of living works of art. Famous gardens of Japan and our own National Arboretum will be shown.

Ron Davis
Ron Davis recently retired from the clinical practice of Chinese medicine and chiropractic. He teaches a series of health care classes on qigong, Taiji, meditation and dietary guidelines. His practice of Zen and Asian aesthetics has led to a long-time interest in bonsai trees. He currently studies with several bonsai masters, primarily Michael Hagedorn at Crataegus Bonsai. Ron enjoys sharing the beauty and mystery of bonsai with everyone.
