In this course, Kristen Intemann, professor of philosophy in the MSU Department of History and Philosophy, will discuss a range of topics aimed at helping us think critically and responsibly about medical claims, scientific claims, political claims and claims made by and about the media. She will address questions such as: How do we know what to believe and what is…well…BS? How do we know whom to trust? What sources of evidence should we use? How can we distinguish real news from “fake” news? How can we assess evidence and recognize errors in reasoning? What are the ways that emerging technologies and social media may trick us?

Kristen Intemann
Kristen Intemann is a professor of philosophy in the Department of History and Philosophy in the College of Letters and Science at Montana State University. She is also the director of the Initiative for Science, Technology, Ethics and Society at MSU, which aims to highlight the social, ethical and policy dimensions of science and engineering. She has authored or co-authored numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, winning prizes from the Philosophy of Science Association and the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics. She is co-author of “The Fight Against Doubt: How to Bridge the Gap Between Scientists and the Public” (Oxford, 2018).Date | Day | Time | Location |
