Tornados: A Field Guide side trip lecture has been postponed indefinitely.
As a research assistant at the National Severe Storms Laboratory in the 1970s, Daniel Purcell was on the ground floor of tornado studies. In this presentation, he will describe his experience as a researcher with the initial Tornado Intercept Project at the laboratory in Norman, OK. His team's storm-intercept van ranged over western Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle equipped with movie cameras and vague notions of where to look. They found more than tornadoes to hold their interest! You'll learn about tornadic storm structure and the tornado life cycle, as well as some history of tornado studies.
