In this course, Sharon Beehler, professor emeritus of English at MSU, will examine Shakespeare's plays to understand the bard's political leanings and what these plays might teach us about our world today. Shakespeare lived in a time not unlike our own where some people regarded Elizabeth I as a tyrannical despot while others viewed her as 'Good Queen Bess.' Her reign was fraught by rebellions and threats to her life, and she had to carefully balance the needs of her subjects with her own views as Queen. Shakespeare, like many artists today, attempted to comment on this precarious situation by writing plays. Many of his plays were based on England's own history and depicted rulers who were perceived as tyrants or good monarchs and citizens who rebelled against both.
