Catastrophic wildfires. Melting glaciers. Drought. Endangered Species. Wealth inequality. This course will explore the history of federal environmental laws in the United States and the Montana Constitution. Participants will also learn about the use of these laws to address some of the most pressing environmental problems we face in Montana. Discussions will also examine the dynamics between the law and politics and whether existing environmental laws in the United States are adequate to protect natural resources.

John Meyer
John Meyer is the founder and executive director of Cottonwood Environmental Law Center. Before starting Cottonwood in 2009, John worked as a biological technician for the U.S. Forest Service and graduated with honors from Vermont Law School. The world is facing unprecedented environmental challenges. Montana is blessed to have some of the strongest environmental laws in the United States. Whether these safeguards will be strong enough to protect the things we all value will depend upon an active and engaged citizenry.
