This talk will delve into the history of coal mining in the Bozeman Pass area and the impact the arrival of the Northern Pacific Railroad had on mining operations. It will include a discussion of the area's geology and the nature of the coal found there. The presentation will conclude with the history of a little-known private railroad built to access the coal deposits along the Meadow and Trail Creek drainages.

Robert Schalla
Robert Schalla is a professional geologist with more than 40 years of experience in the energy business. He received his bachelor's degree in geology from the University of California-Riverside and a master's degree from Oregon State University. Having a lifelong interest in the railroad industry, he has investigated the interrelationship of railroad development and coal mining in southern Montana since his retirement in 2018.
