Description
This course explores how individuals learn to read, one of the most challenging tasks in school. However, with systematic, sequenced and intentional instruction, young children can understand the structures and patterns of English, equipping them to decode the alphabet and comprehend words and sentences. Remarkable! In this class, we'll see the magic happen.
Course Takeaways
Learn how English is both an alphabetic and positional language. Explore how skills in manipulating oral language (e.g., rhyming words, counting syllables, counting words in a sentence, etc.) contribute to a strong foundation in learning to read. Practice language fundamentals with simple, fun activities.

Ann Ellsworth
Dr. Ann Ellsworth, a former elementary classroom teacher, teaches linguistic concepts to teacher candidates. In 2019, Ann received the national Grammar Teacher of the Year Award. Other MSU honors include the Excellence in Online Teaching Award, the President's Excellence in Teaching Award, the Anna K.
