In December 2021, NASA launched the largest telescope ever sent into space. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), which began operation in the summer of 2022 a million miles from Earth, will revolutionize human understanding of the universe. Learn about the telescope, including how it works and what it does, how it searches for signatures of life on other planets and stars, the formation of stars and the evolution of galaxies, and the earliest stars and galaxies to form in the universe.

Jim Manning is a past director of the Taylor Planetarium at the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman. He's also worked at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore as head of the Office of Public Outreach and as executive director of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific in San Francisco before retiring in Bozeman. In addition, he's taught astronomy courses for college and general public audiences and knows his way around the sky.
