The Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule (RRP) course is an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)/U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) certification course designed for all workers who disturb painted surfaces in housing and child-occupied facilities built prior to 1978, including renovation contractors, maintenance workers in multi-family housing, painters and other specialty trades. Under the rule, child-occupied facilities are defined as residential, public or commercial buildings where children under six years of age are present on a regular basis.
The RRP course is intended for students who have no prior knowledge of lead-based paint, but the certification is required regardless of experience. Students learn how to assess and work with lead-based paint hazards in a way that is safe and constructive for themselves and others. To maintain their certification, students must complete a four-hour refresher course every five years.
The Initial Certification course has 8 contact hours. Six hours are spent training in the classroom and taking the written exam. Two hours are spent on 11 different hands-on skill sets in the lab that are evaluated by the instructor. This course can qualify as 4 continuing education units (CEU) toward Home Energy Professional Recertification.
Upon completion of the course, participants will be registered with the EPA as a Certified Lead; Renovation, Repair and Painting Professional. Whether you work for a multi-person operation, or as a sole proprietor, you will need to register as a Certified Firm with the EPA. To complete that application, go to EPA's online Certified Firm registration page at www.epa.gov/lead/getcertified.
Montana Weatherization Network members may take this course at no cost. Use the MT WAP Registration option to register with a $0 fee.
