On February 24, 2022, Vladimir Putin unleashed a war on the neighboring country of Ukraine, which has already resulted in mounting military casualties on the Russian side and a civilian tragedy on the Ukrainian side. What are the declared and the real causes for this war? Who are the players in the conflict? What is the lay of the land, and what is the significance of specific places mentioned in the news? In this lecture, we’ll put the current events in a broader geographical and historical context to gain a deeper understanding of the who, what, where and why of the current conflict.
