Quality Control Inspector lays the groundwork for individuals interested in understanding and expanding their knowledge of monitoring and inspecting weatherized units. Students will thoroughly cover sessions on regulations and standards, desk monitoring, tools of the trade, building assessment, interpretation of infrared imagery, in-progress monitoring, and what to include in a report. The course follows the Department for Energy's standardized curriculum for Quality Control Inspector and has been modified to align with the NREL Job Task Analysis for Quality Control Inspector. The structure of the course includes lecture, dialogue and practical experience through hands-on skill sets.

Additionally, this course can serve as a review to prepare participants for the Building Performance Institutes's (BPI)written exam for certification as a Quality Control Inspector. Learn more about Home Energy Professional certification. As a BPI Test Center, Montana Weatherization Training Center proctors the written exam for an additional fee. This exam can be arranged by request.

Candidates must be BPI Energy Auditor certified and successfully challenge the QCI online exam to become Quality Control Inspector certified. The exam costs $325 (this fee is covered for Montana Weatherization Assistance Personnel contact Montana Weatherization Training Center for more information) Online exam: 50 multiple choice questions; Time Limit: 2.5 hours; Passing Score: 70%

Montana Weatherization Network members may take this course at no cost. Use the MT WAP Registration option to register with a $0 fee.

Aaron Mugaas

Aaron brings deep and relevant experience to the team, with decades of service to the weatherization industry as both a crew member and auditor. He’s also spent time in private industry as a house builder and home inspector. Aaron’s training includes degrees in Biology, and study in Land Resources and Environmental Sciences. His focus at the Training Center is on health and safety, building science, hands-on training of practical skills.

Brian Nickisch

Growing up in Eastern Montana, Brian has experienced every sort of extreme weather event. Witnessing the impact of weather events on communities Brian has lived in has helped develop a passion for being able to help those impacted most. Through acquiring a teaching degree from Montana State University and a master's degree in environmental science from the University of Nevada, Reno, Brian has sought out to improve lives through education and promoting energy efficiency.

In addition to his formal education, Brian's experience teaching high school science, installing solar arrays, and conducting home energy assessments have given him crucial skills that he’s excited to contribute to the Training Center and the weatherization network.


Nick Thomas

Growing up in the Gallatin Valley has offered Nick years of demolition, renovation and building experience as well as a keen knowledge of different building structures and ways of protecting homes from harsh Montana climates. He brings several years of weatherization field experience to the Training Center after working for the HRDC energy assistance program. His standardized work specifications (SWS) and code compliance knowledge shapes his teaching focus toward workplace safety and crew efficiency.

In order to take the BPI Quality Control Inspector written exam, the candidate must currently possess an active BPI Energy Auditor Certification.

This course has 15 contact hours and can qualify as 3.75 continuing education units (CEU) toward Home Energy Professional Recertification.
