Red Star over the Black Sea tells the story of Nâzım Hikmet and his generation. Nâzım Hikmet (1902-1963) is best known as a poet and communist whose daring flight by motorboat from Turkey to the Eastern Bloc captured international headlines in 1951. Considered one of the most important poets to have ever written in the Turkish language, Nâzım Hikmet's dramatic life not only constitutes a great story but also tells us something about the nature of the 20th century.

This collaborative community event is presented by OLLI at MSU and the Belgrade Community Library, with sponsorship by Martel Construction, and is free and open to the public.

There is a 50-person registration cap. Advance registration is recommended, but walk-ins are welcome.

James Meyer

James H. Meyer is an associate professor at Montana State University, where he works on the history of Russia and the Middle East. A frequent visitor to Russia, Meyer has spent approximately four years living and researching in the former Soviet Union. His second book, "Red Star over the Black Sea," was published by Oxford University Press in March 2023.
