Description
In this course, we will explore the poetry and lyrics of the great Leonard Cohen through his written words, performances and music. A productive way to approach Cohen's works is to see his poetry as a complex layering of three major interests: sex and love, religion and language. Most of his songs/poems weave these interests into tapestries that can sometimes be difficult to unravel. Songs like "Suzanne" or "Hallelujah" are examples of the complex layering of these themes. But careful reading and listening are always rewarded. Cohen invites us into his philosophically, theologically and sexually complicated world, and this course accepts this invitation gratefully and wholeheartedly.
