Description

A sequel to the 2021 course, "What Can We Learn from the Fall of Rome?" this course will explore how, during the Dark Ages, imperial order disintegrates into feudalism and Western Europe fragments. While the Church succeeded in maintaining a form of unifying Roman culture and education, power centers shifted from urban palaces to rural castles, and national identities emerged and began to shape society.

The previous course is not required to fully participate and enjoy "Illuminating the Dark Ages: Europe 500-1000."

Course Takeaways

After the end of the Roman order in Western Europe, there was no sharp cleavage between "barbarians" and "Romans." Ethnicity was a social construct, not genetic. Individuals had multiple "identities," some of which were of their own choice. Cultures evolved and borrowed from one another, usually slowly but sometimes quickly. As numerous monarchies evolved, the stability of each partly depended on when they acquired a fixed rule of succession.
