Description
The British Monarchy is the oldest surviving political institution in Europe. This course tells the epic political, religious and cultural story of England during the reign of the Tudor dynasty from 1485-1603. The backbone of this course will be upon the Tudors, as they presided over the creation of a new style of monarchy, a new Protestant church (and the attempts to reverse the Reformation) and a new colonial empire. This course will briefly explain the dynastic turbulence leading to the Wars of the Roses (1399-1485). Next, we'll cover the reigns of Henry VIII and his three children, Edward VI, 'Bloody' Mary and Elizabeth I. More specifically, we will highlight the relationship between the crown and people, which has, from the earliest times, uniquely shaped British politics, religions and culture.
Course Takeaways
Participants will better appreciate the universal fact of monarchy in England, which still exists 1500 years after its creation. They will learn of the strong and popular element of monarchy that makes it more than a fictitious tale of kings, queens, royal heroes and crowned villains. Participants will gain insights into the dialogue between monarchy and people that formed the culture of early modern England, its institutions, laws, customs and traditions.
