Description

Montana is home to seven reservations and 12 Tribal Nations. Learn about the Tribes of Montana from their historical beginnings to their contemporary settings. The course will examine differences in cultures and practices, including ceremony, social structure, traditional and contemporary governance, and identity. Finally, the course includes a brief overview of contact between Montana's Tribes and Euro-American cultures, beginning with the Lewis and Clark Expedition. If time allows, contemporary issues will also be discussed.

Walter Fleming

Walter C. Fleming is department head and professor in the Department of Native American Studies at Montana State University. Fleming earned a Ph.D. in American studies from the University of Kansas. His dissertation is titled, "American Indians and Federal Land Leasing Policies, 1885 - 1917: That Beauty of Cultivation and Thrift Which Always Grows Out of American Energy." He has taught Native culture and history courses for over 40 years and has served as department head for over 20 years. He is the author of three books, including A History and Foundation of American Indian Education Policy, Visions of an Enduring People and The Complete Idiot's Guide to Native American History. He has also written 11 book chapters and numerous articles. Fleming is a two-time awardee of the Educator of the Year from the Montana Indian Education Association and is a Montana "Governor's Humanities Award" recipient. Fleming was born on the Crow Indian Reservation, raised on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation (both in Montana) and is a member of the Kickapoo Tribe in Kansas.
