Description

This course examines the history of reading instruction in the United States, emphasizing the last hundred years. Participants will learn about the underlying theory that popularized Dick and Jane and several spin-offs and how research informed subsequent movements, including the Whole Language approach. Importantly, the course will address what research says about best practices, which is especially helpful for any participant who wants to maximize reading time with their grandchildren. Those who attend this class will have the opportunity to re-examine their own learning-to-read experiences and offer critique, noting the strengths and limitations of different approaches and texts used. Prepare to have fun and learn!

Course Takeaways

Participants will revisit how they learned to read and learn about the trends that have guided reading instruction in this country for the last 100+ years. Additionally, they will be introduced to current research findings that inform how children today are instructed and understand the reading process with new insight.
