Description

In this course, we will address the following topics. How do trees reproduce, grow, and make wood and bark? How are they able to get so large? How do trees sense and react to their environment - light, temperature, predators, helpful organisms? What useful products and services do we get from trees? Do trees "talk" to each other? What is the relationship between trees and fires? What activities related to climate change involve trees? And what are the different kinds of forests in Montana and the West? This is not a course in forest management. Instead, it is a look at tree biology and forest ecology.

Course Takeaways

Participants can walk through or drive by a forest and appreciate the system's complexity, both the visible above-ground and the invisible below-ground. Understanding how trees grow is helpful for homeowners who landscape with trees. And not all trees with needles are pines.
