Description

The Office of Public Instruction’s Summer Institute is a comprehensive staff development venture created to improve the capacities of schools and communities to meet the diverse and increasingly complex social, emotional, and behavioral needs of students. The initiative assists educators and community services personnel in developing the attitudes, skills, and systems necessary to help each student leave public education with the social competence needed to succeed in society and the workplace. The overall goal of this Summer Institute is to motivate and equip individuals, schools, and communities to unite in creating nurturing, competent, caring and responsible children and adolescents with an emphasis on safe schools.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to:

  1. Analyze school resources that support teaching the whole child.
  2. Analyze and reflect on how session information might be adapted or implemented in
    different contexts.
  3. Evaluate their role as educators, part of a larger educational system.

Requirements for Academic Credit

  1. Students taking the course for credit must attend 30 hours of instruction during the institute.
  2. After the institute, students submit a word-processed 2-page summary paper of the most important concepts learned. No references nor footnotes are needed. Submit the paper electronically as a Google doc or a pdf. file. Send to ann.ellsworth@montana.edu.

Assessment

The final paper will be assessed on content and organization of ideas. A traditional grading scale will be used.

Final Paper Due Date

Final papers are due August 1 unless previous arrangements have been made in writing with the instructor. Papers are to be submitted electronically to the instructor.

Ann Ellsworth

Dr. Ann Ellsworth, a former elementary classroom teacher, teaches literacy and language concepts to teacher candidates. In 2019, Ann received the national Grammar Teacher of the Year Award. Other MSU honors include the Excellence in Online Teaching Award, the President's Excellence in Teaching Award, the Anna K. Fridley Distinguished Teaching Award, and the Dorothy Aasheim Memorial Award for Outstanding Service. Her research explores content knowledge essentials for teachers.
