Description
Modern art simultaneously articulated the complicated events in Europe and the Americas between 1865 and 1965 and redefined what could be considered art. Together, we will view this history through the lens of artists challenged by the social realities of their time. From Manet to DuChamp, we will gain a deeper understanding of how art can capture human experiences, including war, family, social inequalities and spirituality, augmented by a bit of humor and discussion. You do not need to be a fan of abstraction or have previous knowledge of art to enjoy this class. Still, you must bring your curiosity and willingness to broaden your views of art and history to benefit from the course fully.
Course Takeaways
Participants in this course will gain a broader understanding of art and the ability to view works of art critically, no matter the style, era or culture. Through careful analysis of each "ism" of Modernism, OLLI students will gain a deeper understanding of the diverse and historical events in Europe and the Americas between 1865 and 1965.
