Description
From a structural perspective, the central priority of classical music is pattern development. It's built into the form of every first movement of every symphony, sonata, string quartet and concerto and is the main feature that drives the genre. The same thing is true of jazz. The difference between the two genres is that classical composers fully develop the material through various exhaustive approaches and processes. They're all included in the written manuscript. Jazz composers write music that is intentionally alive with undeveloped or underdeveloped raw material. In jazz music, the performers develop the material, and that development is not written down but happens in real-time, extemporaneously, as improvisation.
Course Takeaway
- Learn how every piece of jazz music is a direct or indirect twin of the sonata-allegro form with an exposition, development and recapitulation.
- What materials (motive, genome, fractal) do classical composers and jazz performers typically explore through permutations of seminal material?
- How architectonic processes result in some of the most beautiful, emotional, memorable and moving music in history (and in the future).
- This course will change listeners' listening experience and increase the impact of music through understanding and without ruining the expressive or emotional impact of all music.
