Description
This course will explore the origins of the endocrine system, from one-cell organisms in the ocean to the complex mixture of human and bacterial cells that make up YOU. Topics to be covered include hormones, the thyroid, diabetes, the regulation of fat storage and anti-obesity drugs. In each class, we will discuss a normally functioning system, what goes wrong and what we can do about it when it does. Each week will include ample time to ask your questions about health and healthcare, noting that this course is for information and entertainment, not medical care.
Course Takeaways
The attendee will gain an understanding of:
- The origin of the endocrine system and how it works in the body.
- The history, anatomy, function and dysfunction of the thyroid system.
- How the body manages energy stores and availability through insulin and glucagon. How diabetes develops in the body, its complications and treatment.
- How the body regulates body fat stores through stimulation or suppression of hunger and other mechanisms, and how the new anti-obesity drugs fit into this system.
