Instructor Jo Anne Troxel will lead this discussion of how writers use humor, both light and dark, to enlighten our awareness of the human condition and culture. Participants will read authors well-known for their ability to make us smile and even laugh out loud, including Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde, Mark Twain, Ambrose Bierce, Dorothy Parker and Garrison Keillor. Through understanding the techniques writers use -- exaggeration, irony, the absurd and farce --we can better understand how humor becomes a clever way to express truth while at the same time engaging the reader.
