Description
How often do you think about microorganisms, if at all? You may focus on diseases they cause. But do you appreciate their benefits as the basis of life on this planet and to our health? We will discuss topics of real-life interest, such as how antibiotics work and how microbes outwit us by becoming resistant; the role of the microbiome in health and how probiotics may fit in; practical applications of microbial processes and genetics in human activities and our world; among others. The course will also include some hands-on lab activities, including petri plates you can take home to test objects of interest, testing household cleaning products, extracting DNA from strawberries and making a microbial "terrarium."
Course Takeaway
Participants will gain a deeper understanding of and appreciation for the role that microbes play in our daily lives including:
- Methods that we use to control undesirable microbes and how they may become resistant through naturally occurring genetic changes.
- The habitats that microbes occupy, the requirements they need to survive and thrive and how they affect those ecosystems.
- Experience and perform some simple experimental methods that microbiologists use to study our microbial world.
