Christine Foreman will discuss her work on the microbes that live in the Earth's harsh polar regions. Foreman's research group has made important discoveries about the microbes that survive in glacial ice and meltwater. Some bacteria photosynthesize like plants and play an essential role in the global carbon cycle. Others have unique biochemistries that could lead to improved biotechnologies. Her research engages students to journey to some of Earth's most remote places and bring back samples to study at MSU's Center for Biofilm Engineering and Subzero Research Lab.
