President Thomas Jefferson's success in wresting the Louisiana territory from France created the conditions for increased commerce toward both oceans bordering the new nation. Accordingly, Jefferson tasked the Lewis and Clark Expedition with evaluating the prospects of commercial overland travel to North America's west coast. To this end, the navigation and source of the Missouri River became a major target of the expedition. Learn about the search for the origin of the Missouri River through a historical lens and how writer Jacob Brower used modern methods to find the true origin of the Missouri River in the late 1800s.
