Thank you for your interest in the Soil Fertility for Gardens and Small Acreages course, provided by MSU Extension. The course is now full, but a waitlist is available above that you can join and be notified if a spot in the course opens before the start date. The Soil Fertility Extension Program website also provides helpful information on this topic and is a great place to begin learning.
Our hope is to run this course again in the future, asynchronously. This means all the same the material and videos will be available for students to access, without the live lecture component determining the course duration or limiting the number of spots available. We also plan to offer the course again synchronously in winter 2027 and 2028 so if you prefer synchronous to asynchronous, join the waitlist above or visit the Soil Fertility Extension Program website for updates, thank you!

This 9-week Soil Fertility course will be taught by Dr. Clain Jones with a target audience of gardeners, small acreage landowners, and market gardeners (vegetables, fruits, and berries), although all are welcome.

This course will explain the fundamentals of soil properties and nutrient management, including how to diagnose nutrient deficiencies and determine the correct source, rate, timing and placement of soil amendments and fertilizers. Participants will practice using this information to select amendments and fertilizers in an ecological and economically optimal way for healthy soil and plant production.

The course will be taught online on Thursdays from noon to 1pm MT, January 22 to March 19, but if you can’t make that time, you can watch the recordings. There will be supplemental readings and other resources to enhance your learning. A certificate / badge will be available for those who complete the course and pass each module’s quiz.

Fee:  $10.00

Online: Synchronous
